Anti Mosedale Horseshoe - Photo Gallery
There was frost on the car, it was sunny and cold, it was 1C when I reached Ulpha and not much warmer when I parked at Overbeck Bridge. I walked up the steep grassy slope to Dropping Crag, by then I was warm enough to walk in my teeshirt; I scrambled over rock then clambered up a grassy side gully before hauling myself up an awkward rock step to Bell Rib for the surprise view of Wastwater. I still didn't fancy the scramble onto Bell Rib, and clambered back on to the path; there is still a rough climb, then still more climbing to the summit of Yewbarrow. The cold wind then made me put on my jacket, gloves and hat; I made the long walk over the broad saddle, to the cairn at the north top, and the interesting down-climb to Dore Head. I made the long steady climb to Red Pike's subsidiary top, over to visit The Chair, and then across a broad plateau to the summit.
I descended to a col, and then walked up the easier gradient to the summit of Scoat Fell, and made the long walk, by side of a wall, down to a to col, with a good view of Ennerdale Water, and up to the summit of Haycock. There was a rough descent, then a grassy walk to the top of Little Gowder Crag; I clambered up rocks to the summit and then worked my way around rocks to descend, with more walking on the right hand side of a wall to the summit of Caw Fell. I traversed a grassy, then bouldery scree, shoulder of Haycock to High Pikehow; it was too steep to descend directly to Nether Beck, so I followed a grassy ridge down to a path. It was a long walk back along the interesting valley of Nether Beck to the bridge on the road back to the car park.
